Fire Hazards in the Home

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Thousands of people die each year in house fires. The most common causes of fires include electrical wiring, heating units and furnaces, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).  Furnace and heating related fires alone make up 11.4 percent of all home fires each year. Most often these fires occur during the winter months.

Learn more from our Personal Injury Lawyers Rochester.

If you are a homeowner, it is important to follow the USFA’s recommendations to avoid potential fire hazards. Call a professional if you notice any of these problem areas and never try to make your own electrical or heating related repairs. If you are a renter, you should contact your landlord immediately and notify them of any hazards or necessary repairs:

  • – Be sure all furnace controls and emergency shutoffs are in proper working condition
  • – Inspect the walls and ceiling near the furnace and along the chimney line. If the wall is hot or discolored, additional pipe insulation or clearance may be required
  • – Check the pipe seams. Are they well supported; free of holes, and cracks? Soot along or around seams may be an indicator of a leak
  • – Look for and replace loose or frayed cords on all electrical devices
  • – If outlets or switches feel warm, shut off the circuit and have them checked by an electrician
  • – Avoid overloading outlets with high-wattage appliances
